Nourlangie Rock
A BIG rock with lots of interesting colours. It
served for thousands of years as a temporary Aboriginal camp because
it has a huge rock shelter which protected the clan groups during
the Wet. And what better thing to do on long rainy days than to
do some paintings? Thus Anbangbang Shelter became an art gallery.
There are Parks & Wildlife Ranger talks all
over Kakadu during the Dry so I went to as many as I could. I
saw a slide show on ginga (saltwater crocs) in Cooinda, heard
this ranger talk on Aboriginal culture & the history of the
Nourlangie Rock area, heard a couple of talks on Aboriginal rock
art at Ubirr and went on a wildlife walk at a Mamukala Wetlands.
That ranger could not tell one bird from another but it was an
interesting talk all the same. The part of the job that he enjoys
most is the fire lighting (fire is used as an environmental tool)
and the shooting things (feral buffalo & pig control).
