Larrakia - Saltwater People - are the traditional
owners of Darwin and the surrounding countryside. The area around
Darwin Harbour was covered in monsoon vine forests and mangroves.
The grasses are really tall and a species of bamboo (Bambusa arnhemica
or Gwarikgwa) is endemic to the Top End.

** The
tree looked like a wattle and my "Jawoyn Plant Identikit"
lists it as black wattle. It is often associated with monsoon
vine forests and the pods can be rubbed between the hands to produce
a soapy lather with water.
