East Alligator River

The East Alligator River separates Kakadu National Park from Arnhem Land. Of course there are no alligators here but the maps were made before the mistake was realised. These beasts are definitely crocs! Cahill's Crossing links the two areas and has been the site of a fatal crocodile attack. In another incident, a group of men tried to cross in a Toyota 4X4 when the tide was getting too high. There was a croc in the way on the crossing and it wouldn't move. Its tail overturned the car so the occupants had to scramble out and sit on the side of the car. The croc still wasn't going to move so they had to wait until Parks & Wildlife came to extricate them from their predicament.

The river is lined with white sand, paperbarks, beach hibiscus and a monsoon rainforest. Dead trees from past Wets make interesting architectural statements. There are barramundi in the river so it is a popular fishing spot.
